Other Trips

This section is a brief personal history of my travels.

  • 1965,1966 Lanikila, all-around summer camp for boys. Learned lots of useful outdoor skills.
  • 1968 First overnight solo bicycle trip. Some adults along the way thought I was running away from home -- couldn't understand a 10 year old kid on his own.
  • 1969, 1970 Tourist in Mexico. Explored Mexico City on my own, met Mexican kids, hung out, got an up-close view of another culture.
  • 1971, 1972 Summer camp at Forestcraft, rugged backpack-oriented camp that gives a great outdoor education.
  • 1973 Ski racing camp in Switzerland.
  • 1974 Ten day bicyle trip with Ted Cline
  • 1976 3,000 mile, 42 bicycle trip with Ted Cline. Oregon to Missouri.
  • 1983 Two weeks hiking in Switzerland, four weeks in northern India, two weeks in England and Scottland with Candace O'Connor. India part was done with Mountain Travel.
  • 1986 Six weeks in Nepal with Mountain Travel. Climbed Mt. Mera (21,200'), an easy trekker peak, along with a number of other easy peks.
  • 1988 Eight week bicycle trip, London to Rome, with Amy Faver.
  • 1992 Three week tour of Costa Rica with Marilyn Sandford. Windsurfing, snorkeling, hiking.
  • 1993 Nine day business trip to Japan, consulting for Mitsubishi Electric Company.
  • 1994 Ten week solo bicycle trip, Amsterdam - Stockholm - Tallinn - Riga (then by bus, plane, train to Poland, Czech Republic, Germany, Switzerland).
  • 1998 Three week trip to Italy and Greece with Mona Lin.
  • 1999 Four days in Baja, Mexico with Annie Warren.
  • Lots of two to ten day backpacking trips scattered in from an eary age. Did a few hundred miles of the AT and PCT. Lots of winter trips. But nothing longer than ten days with a full pack -- so I have nothing like the experience of PCT or AT through hikers.
